The FTC reveals that a company called Cure Encapsulations Inc.sold pills that contained Garcinia Cambogia. The latter is a tropical fruit, which is also known as Brindleberry. It’ssometimes used as a “natural” means to help people get rid of extrapounds. The pills (called Quality Encapsulations Garcinia Cambogia) were offered on Amazon.
What had happened? Well, a website had posted several fake excellent reviews to make the pills be taken as reputable, and the reviews were far from being true. E.g., they claimed the pills could help people eat less and lose up totwenty pounds, as well as make new fat cells stop being created.
According to Andrew Smith, Director of Bureau of Consumer Protection at the FTC’s, people take reviews seriously when buying something over the internet. When companies “turn to” fake reviews to boosttheir reputation on Amazon, this negatively impacts not only those making purchases but also companies having chosen to use fake reviews.
A spokesperson at Amazon says theyendorse the Commission’s efforts to improve the situation. The spokesperson further notes that Amazon puts enough efforts in protecting the integrity of reviews in their store since customers rely onother shoppers say.
The company claims that even one review that’s not authentic is too many. They have clear guidelines for both reviewers and sellers. Amazon suspends, bans, and takes legal action on those who don’t want to follow the company’s policies, as the spokesperson says.
